Baccarat has no decisions after the bet: the cards are drawn by fixed rules, so the only baccarat strategy that changes your results is which bet you make and how much you stake. This guide covers the odds of every bet, how to read the patterns on the scoreboard, what betting systems such as Martingale actually do, and the tips that make a session last longer. For the rules themselves, start with how to play baccarat.
With the standard eight-deck shoe, every possible deal comes out like this:
| Bet | Pays | Wins | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker | 1 to 1, less 5% commission | 45.86% | 1.06% |
| Player | 1 to 1 | 44.62% | 1.24% |
| Tie | 8 to 1 | 9.52% | 14.36% |
On a tie, Banker and Player bets are returned. Leave ties out and Banker wins 50.7% of the hands that are decided.
The Banker hand draws last, so it wins slightly more often. The 5% commission is there to balance that, and even after it Banker has the lowest house edge on the table: 1.06% against 1.24% for Player.
Many online and live tables are no-commission baccarat: Banker pays even money, but a Banker win with a total of 6 pays only half. That raises the Banker edge to about 1.46%. A Banker win on 6 happens in 5.39% of hands, so you will see it about once every 19 hands. The paytable in the game’s help screen shows which version you are playing.
The Tie pays 8 to 1 but carries a 14.36% house edge, more than thirteen times the Banker bet. Side bets carry much higher edges than the main bets: Player Pair, paying 11 to 1 on a pair in the Player’s first two cards, has a 10.36% house edge with eight decks. Read a side bet’s paytable before you use it.
Decide a session budget and a bet size that gives you at least 50 bets, and keep to it. Baccarat hands are quick, so a budget goes faster than it feels.

Live and online baccarat tables show the history of the shoe in grids called roads. They are easy to read once you know the layout:

No. Each hand is dealt from what is left of the shoe, and after a few hands the remaining cards say almost nothing about who wins next. In 200,000 simulated eight-deck shoes, the chance of a Banker win after a run of Bankers stayed at 50.7% whether the run was zero hands long or six:

Streaks are normal, not a signal: 46% of shoes contain a run of six or more Bankers. Following the Big Road (“follow the dragon”) or betting against it (“chop”) are equally good, and equally unable to beat the house edge. Use the roads to keep track of the shoe, not to size your bets.
Betting systems change how much you stake after a win or a loss. The most common:
| System | How it works |
|---|---|
| Martingale | Double the stake after every loss; go back to one unit after a win |
| Fibonacci | Move one step along 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8… after a loss, two steps back after a win |
| Paroli | Double after a win, up to three wins in a row, then go back to one unit |
| 1-3-2-6 | Stake 1, 3, 2 and 6 units on consecutive wins; start again after a loss or a completed run |
| Flat betting | The same stake every hand |
Run over the same simulated shoes, betting Banker for 60-hand sessions, they produce very different sessions but the same long-run cost:

Martingale finished ahead in 81% of sessions, against 46% for flat betting, but its worst session lost 1,552 units, because a long losing run meets the table limit. The cost per unit staked stays at the Banker edge whichever system you choose. A system can change the shape of a session; it cannot change the odds.
