Pick your two cards and the dealer’s face-up card, and the calculator shows the best play under basic strategy: hit, stand, double, split or surrender. Below it, the trainer deals random hands so you can practise the decisions and keep score.

Deal a hand, pick your play, and see if it matches basic strategy. Uses the same rules as the calculator above.
Your score will appear here.
4 to 8 decks, double after split allowed. Based on basic strategy for each rule set; it does not count cards or know the cards already dealt.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Choose your two cards. Pick “10/J/Q/K” for any ten or picture card; they all count as 10.
  2. Choose the dealer’s up card.
  3. Set the table rules. Tick “Dealer hits soft 17” if the game rules say so, and untick “Surrender allowed” if the table has no surrender option.

The answer updates as soon as you change anything. Where the best play is to double or surrender, it also tells you what to do if the game does not let you.

What the Advice Is Based On

The calculator uses basic strategy for 4 to 8 decks with doubling allowed after a split, the usual setup at online and live dealer tables. It holds two complete strategy tables, one for each soft-17 rule, and every one of the 350 cells in the stand-on-soft-17 table was checked against two independent published sources (Wikipedia’s basic strategy table and Wizard of Odds’ strategy rules). Every combination of cards, dealer card and rule setting on this page was then tested against those tables.

Switching to “dealer hits soft 17” changes six plays: you double 11 against an ace, double soft 18 against a 2 and soft 19 against a 6, and surrender hard 15, hard 17 and a pair of 8s against an ace.

Some hands worth checking

These are hands where the right play surprises many players:

Your hand v dealerDealer stands on soft 17Dealer hits soft 17
Hard 16 (10 and 6) v 10Surrender (otherwise hit)Surrender (otherwise hit)
Hard 12 (10 and 2) v 3HitHit
Hard 11 (6 and 5) v aceHitDouble (otherwise hit)
Soft 18 (ace and 7) v 9HitHit
Pair of 9s v 7StandStand
Pair of 8s v 10SplitSplit

What a Strategy Calculator Can’t Do

  • It only covers your first two cards. After you take a third card, use the hard or soft total. If the play is to double but you have three cards, hit instead, except with soft 18, where you stand.
  • It does not count cards. Basic strategy uses only your hand and the dealer’s up card, not the cards already played.
  • It does not change the house edge. Basic strategy keeps the edge as low as the table rules allow, typically between 0.5% and 1% of what you bet, but the casino keeps its edge.
  • Tables without a hole card play differently. Where the dealer takes a second card only after everyone has acted, it is rarely right to double or split against a 10 or an ace.

Blackjack calculator: frequently asked questions

How does a blackjack calculator work?

You enter your two cards and the dealer’s face-up card, and it looks up the best play under basic strategy for the table rules you choose: hit, stand, double, split or surrender.

Is this blackjack calculator accurate?

It uses basic strategy for 4 to 8 decks with doubling after a split. The stand-on-soft-17 table was checked cell by cell against Wikipedia and Wizard of Odds, and every combination on the page was tested against it.

What should you do with 16 against a dealer 10?

Surrender if the table allows it. If it does not, hit.

Should you always split 8s in blackjack?

Yes, with one exception: when the dealer hits soft 17 and shows an ace, surrender a pair of 8s if you can, otherwise split.

When should you double down in blackjack?

With hard 11 against a 2 to 10, hard 10 against a 2 to 9, hard 9 against a 3 to 6, and with several soft hands against a dealer 3 to 6. The calculator shows each case.

Does the calculator work for live dealer blackjack?

Yes, if the game uses 4 to 8 decks and lets you double after splitting. Check the game rules to see whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17 and whether surrender is offered.

Can a blackjack calculator help you win?

It helps you make the best play on each hand, which keeps the house edge as low as the rules allow, typically 0.5% to 1%. It cannot remove the edge or guarantee a win.

How can I practise blackjack strategy for free?

Use the trainer on this page: it deals random hands, checks your choice against basic strategy and keeps score. Many online casinos also offer blackjack in free demo mode.
