Play blackjack for free with play chips, and switch on the hints to see the basic strategy play for every hand.
Play free blackjack right here, with play chips and no download or sign-up. The game deals from a six-deck shoe, the dealer stands on soft 17 and a blackjack pays 3 to 2. Switch on the hints and it shows the basic strategy play for every hand, so you can practise as you go.

Small rule changes move the house edge, so it is worth knowing what you are playing. This is how the free game is set up:
| Rule | In this game | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Decks | 6, reshuffled when a quarter of the shoe is left | More decks slightly raise the house edge: 0.60% with four decks, 0.64% with six, 0.66% with eight, with every other rule the same. |
| Soft 17 | Dealer stands | Standing on soft 17 instead of hitting lowers the house edge by about 0.2%. |
| Blackjack pays | 3 to 2 | A 6 to 5 payout adds about 1.4% to the house edge. Check this before you sit down at any table. |
| Doubling | Any first two cards, including after a split | Not being able to double after a split adds about 0.12%. |
| Splitting | One split; split aces get one card each | One card on each split ace is the common rule. Most tables also let you split again if you get another pair; this game does not. |
| Dealer blackjack | Dealer checks with an ace or 10 showing | You only lose your original bet to a dealer blackjack, never a double or split. |
With these rules and perfect basic strategy, the house edge is about 0.5%: on average you lose about 50p for every £100 you bet. Most blackjack games have a house edge between 0.5% and 1%, which is why blackjack is one of the cheapest games in the casino when you play it well.
Tick Show basic strategy hints and the game tells you the best play for each hand under these rules: when to hit, stand, double or split. It updates as the hand changes, so after a hit it tells you what to do with your new total. Play a few dozen hands with the hints on, then turn them off and see how many you get right.
To look up a single hand, use the blackjack calculator, which also covers tables where the dealer hits soft 17 and surrender is allowed. The full charts, and the reasons behind them, are in our blackjack basic strategy guide, and the blackjack rules page covers the game from the start.
A free game plays exactly like the real thing, with one difference: nothing is at stake. That makes it the right place to learn the rules and the strategy. When you move to real money, two things change: the table rules may differ (check the payout for a blackjack, the soft 17 rule and the number of decks in the game’s help screen), and a losing run now costs you. Many online casinos also offer their blackjack games in a free demo mode. In Great Britain, licensed casinos have to verify your age before you can play, even in demo mode.
When you are ready to play for real, these casinos reviewed here run blackjack tables. Availability depends on where you live.

Even with perfect strategy, the house keeps an edge on every hand, and a losing run can be long. Set a budget before you play for real money, choose a stake that fits it, and stop when it is gone. Free, confidential support is available at BeGambleAware.org. 18+ only.
