Every roulette spin is independent, and every bet on the table pays slightly less than its true odds. On a European wheel that gap, the house edge, is 2.70% of every bet, whichever numbers you pick and however you size your stakes. No betting system changes it.
What a strategy can change is the shape of your session: how long your money lasts, how often you walk away ahead, and how big the swings are. The strategies that actually help are about the table you choose and how you manage your budget. Betting systems only move the risk around.
This is the one decision that lowers what roulette costs you.
| Wheel | House edge | Expected loss per £100 staked |
|---|---|---|
| French (la partage), even-money bets | 1.35% | £1.35 |
| European (single zero) | 2.70% | £2.70 |
| American (double zero) | 5.26% | £5.26 |
| American five-number bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3) | 7.89% | £7.89 |
House edges are Wizard of Odds’ figures. On a French table, even-money bets (red/black, odd/even, 1–18/19–36) get half your stake back when the ball lands on zero. On a double-zero wheel you pay almost twice as much for the same bets. See our roulette rules guide for how each wheel works.
On a single-zero wheel every bet has the same 2.70% edge. What differs is how often you win and how much. Red or black wins 48.6% of spins and pays 1 to 1, so your balance moves slowly. A single number wins 2.7% of spins and pays 35 to 1, so you will usually lose several bets in a row between wins. Neither is “safer” in the long run; outside bets just make a budget last more spins.
Decide how much you are prepared to spend, split it into the number of spins you want to play, and stop when it is gone. Setting a win point to walk away at is fine too. A system that tells you to raise your stake after a loss is the easiest way to break both rules.
Most online casinos offer demo versions of their RNG roulette games. They are the cheapest way to learn the layout and try out a betting system before you use real money.

Betting systems tell you how much to stake on each spin, usually on an even-money bet. They are all built to win small amounts often, in exchange for an occasional large loss. Wizard of Odds, who has analysed each of them, puts it plainly: betting systems cannot beat a game with a house edge, and cannot even dent it.
| System | How it works | What happens in a bad run |
|---|---|---|
| Martingale | Double your stake after every loss; go back to one unit after a win | Stakes grow fastest of any system: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32… |
| Reverse Martingale (Paroli) | Double your stake after a win; go back to one unit after a loss | Losses stay small, but a session usually ends a little down |
| D’Alembert | Raise your stake by one unit after a loss; lower it by one after a win | Stakes grow slowly, so swings are smaller than the Martingale |
| Fibonacci | Move one step up the sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13… after a loss; two steps back after a win | Stakes grow more slowly than the Martingale, but still fast |
| Labouchère | Write a list of numbers; bet the first plus the last; cross both off after a win, add the lost amount to the end after a loss | The list can grow long and the stakes large |
The Martingale is the best-known system and the easiest to test. Start with one unit on red; after each loss, double the bet. When you finally win, you recover everything you lost plus one unit, and start again.
The catch is the losing run. With 63 units you can afford six bets in a row (1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32). Six losses in a row on a European wheel happen only 1.8% of the time from any given start, but over a session they are very likely.

Most runs end with a one-unit win, which is why the system feels as though it works. Now and then a run ends with the whole bankroll gone, and on average the losses outweigh the wins by exactly the house edge on everything you staked. Table maximums make it worse: once the next doubled bet is above the limit, the system cannot continue. Our Martingale strategy guide goes through it step by step.
The wheel has no memory. Red coming up five times in a row does not make black more likely on the next spin; the chance is still 18 in 37. Every system is a pattern of bet sizes, and every bet in that pattern has the same negative expected value, so the total does too. A system can make small wins more frequent only by making big losses more severe.
